Kelly Beavers, of IBM, discusses the profound impact data growth has on the storage environment today. Traditionally, companies have implemented additional storage solutions in an effort to get a handle on data growth. Companies need to manage data growth smarter. By having complete visibility, control and automation within the infrastructure - companies can build a true dynamic storage infrastructure.
My name is Kelly Beavers and I am the Business Line Executive for the Storage Software Portfolio at IBM.
You know, data growth is really having a profound effect on the storage environment across the world and even in challenging economic times that we experienced in 2008, there is absolutely no sign that data growth is abating. ...
Social networking on its own is actually causing a new and emerging dilemma for businesses around the world. Businesses are starting to use social networking to actually conduct business. And so if you think about regulatory requirements for storing and protecting business data, that certainly is having an impact and will have an increasing impact as we go forward in time.
traditionally, clients have opted to throw more storage at the infrastructure in an effort to get a handle on data growth. We at IBM believe there must be a better way to do this, a smarter way to do this, a more affordable way to do this.
We really encourage clients to employ three techniques into the building out of a dynamic storage infrastructure. These are gaining visibility, getting control, and implementing automation inside the infrastructure. First of all, with visibility, customers gain the awareness of what is really going on, not only with the infrastructure itself, but with the data and the processes underneath the infrastructure. Secondly, we encourage clients to employ storage solutions that will give them control of the infrastructure. This is really about managing the infrastructure through policies.
And thirdly, automation gives clients the ability to achieve more operational efficiency inside the infrastructure to reduce costs and to eliminate manual processes that are often very error prone.
IBM has market-leading capabilities to help customers achieve a dynamic storage infrastructure. Tivoli Storage Productivity Center is about managing the environment. Tivoli Storage Manager is about protecting the environment. And System Storage SAN Volume Controller is about enabling the storage infrastructure to be virtualized as well and all the benefits that come with virtualization. So the combination of these capabilities are what really will enable clients to achieve efficiencies for business resiliency, improved service levels, reduced costs, and security in the environment.
