Israel Urged to Join Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty

At a meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Arab nations urged Israel on Thursday to join the global Non-Proliferation Treaty and repeated their calls for a nuclear-free Middle East. Israel is the only country in the Middle East with a stockpile of nuclear weapons, but Israel has never confirmed nor denied it has nuclear weapons. By shunning the forty-year-old Non-Proliferation Treaty, Israel has not had to reject atomic arms or allow the IAEA to probe all of its nuclear sites. Thursday's meeting marked the first time the IAEA's policy-making board tackled the topic of Israel's nuclear arsenal since 1991. Mohamed Mostafa Fawzy, Egypt's ambassador to the IAEA: "So what we are discussing here is how to apply the safeguards to every state in the Middle East. This is a precise point that we have to deal with, applying the safeguards. So it's not only that we are asking Israel to join the NPT [Non-Proliferation Treaty] or not. We are asking for the application of the safeguards agreements on all states in the Middle East."

Glyn Davies, the US Ambassador to the IAEA, defended Israel's stance on nuclear weapons. Glyn Davies: "Israel has broken no agreements nor failed to fulfill obligations to the agency. Discussion of this item distracts our collective attention from other pressing matters before the board. Premier among those is Iran, which stands in violation of the NPT and IAEA safeguards obligations and of resolutions of the IAEA Board of Governors and the UN Security Council."

  • The fact that Israel has refused to agree to the terms of the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty makes it an illegitimate rouge state.

  • @14revolutioncalling the IAEA always criticizes Iran for breaking the agreements in the treaty.

Saudi is not Israel's "bitch", nor is America (though Saudi might be America's "bitch").

the persians and arabs hated each other long before any modern state of Israel.

and no, the middle east is not changing that much. it will go from dictatorships to islamic theocracies.

  • @beepu2 Iran is not making nukes....they are developing nuclear power just like other nations...but, still if Israel isn't part of the NPT then they have no say in it.......and as far as Saudi goes....they have been America's bitch for some time....and when I say America's bitch...I mean Israel's bitch....but, the Middle East is changing and the strangle hold of Zionism is crumbling.

  • @14revolutioncalling iran signed the NPT. therefore it is obligated to not make nukes. its not like Israel is the only one saying that iran should not get nukes. Saudi Arabia is pressuring US even more about this

  • @beepu2 based upon your logic...Israel has NO Right to demand the "West" to stop Iran from obtaining NUKES........but, enough arguing with a Zionist Internet Commando.....Israel will get what is coming to it.

  • @14revolutioncalling 1. Who said that Israel is not allowed to have nukes? who are you? Israel's mother?

Israel never made any agreement of nukes, it has no obligation to agree to any expections or admit to anything. What right does US have to nukes?

    2. Typical anti zion/jew logic. "jews had a motive, that must mean they did it"

    3. I am sure Russia and America are also ready to destroy the world in their defense of stolen land.

  • @beepu2 really.....that is what you have to say....Israel is not allowed to have nukes....they don't admit they have nukes and the world does not demand that they prove otherwise......another reason JFK was killed....he was going to force nuclear inspection upon Israel. Israel has nuke and is more then willing to destroy the entire planet in their defense of stolen land.

  • @14revolutioncalling that is why Israel is allowed nuclear weapons and iran is not.

    iran signed the treaty.

    Israel did not.

  • The US representative is clearly controlled by Zionists.....one side of his mouth says that Israel is done no wrong and the other side of his mouth says Iran is the issue.....Iran has agreed with the treaty, and allows inspections = Israel has not agreed with the treaty and does not allow inspections.......and the Zionist drum beats on until we go to war with Iran.

  • just another reason why Iran needs nukes.
