This is a song by Peggy Lee and the Benny Goodman orchestra, recorded in the 1940s.

ELMER'S TUNE
Glenn Miller
- words and music by Elmer Albrecht, Sammy Gallop and Dick Jurgens

Why are the stars always winkin' and blinkin' above?
What makes a fellow start thinkin' of fallin' in love?
It's not the season, the reason is plain as the moon
It's just Elmer's Tune

What makes a lady of eighty go out on the loose?
Why does a gander meander in search of a goose?
What puts the kick in a chicken, the magic in June?
It's just Elmer's Tune

Listen
Listen
There's a lot you're liable to be missin'
Sing it
Swing it
Any old way and any old time

The hurdy-gurdies, the birdies, the cop on the beat
The candy maker, the baker, the man on the street
The city charmer, the farmer, the man in the moon
All sing Elmer's Tune

  • Wow, I can still remember the first time I heard this song. It was back in 1942. Ah, I love it. I was running around with a girl named Doris. We were driving home one night after a Armed Forces Dance and it came over the radio.

  • Fantastic. Early Peggy Lee! A voice like satin!

    Thanks for posting this!

  • This is too old for me.

  • My ultra-cool dad used to sing this to me.

  • @old87country

    you are full of shit

  • Just like Charlie & his Orchestra :)

  • I'm 13 years old and I'm practically the only one in my school that listens to this kind of music. It's catchy!!!

  • Is that Gene Kruper on drums? I just love his slightly off beat single shots. And of course I delight in Peggy Lee's singing ....

    Al.

  • My absolute favorite Peggy Lee song.

  • True creativity (with a little whimsy) in the lyrics.

  • what makes a gander meander?
