The Jews saw Christ as an impostor. Although, He was immortal. Immortality in flesh. God as man. He came at the proper time, the scriptures foretold. But Jews, in there historic yet current ignorance and stubbornness, they persist in denial of Jesus. It was Christ in the cloud by day/flame by night that led yall out from Egypt. Actually Pilate was a prefect. Earlier on, when he wrote about Claudius' reign, he said Claudius was the first to appoint procurators as provincial governors. This is reflected in Josephus, where he refers to a procurator as an 'epitropos' and a prefect as a 'hegemon'. So either the blurb in Annales 15.44 is a forgery, or Christians did some touching up.

@EruditeScythian Same with me. I even shelled out big bucks to acquire his earlier _Revolution in Judea_. Scholars like to pooh-pooh Maccoby, but Rabbi Boteach has written of him as being a "brilliant" man, which I think is true.

@CarmineFragione Do not believe this man Boteach, he is presenting a false image of the way in which Jews responded to Jesus' claim to be the Meshiach. Now I don't believe that he claimed to be God but I can certainly assure you that Jews goaded for Jesus' crucifixion. If you read the Talmud (Gittin 57b), it says that Jewish apostates and magicians are boiling in hot excrement, this includes Yeshua whom they derogatively call Yashu.
