I know exactly what you're talking about. I have had countless experiences like that. I'll be thinking about someone I haven't seen or talked about in a long time and coincidentally, my friend will bring up their name. very odd...
Shes referencing a bio chemist and in the meaning of the words "collective memory", its basically saying that evolutionary tangents in individual animals thought processes throughout their lives have led to the culmination of the best thoughts possible within the bounds of how far natural selection has acted upon that certain species.
Its not actually a cognitive link to your ancestors but rather a subtle leash on you behavior based on the parameters set by the successful thoughts/actions of the people you descended from.
A family line who has a strong inclination to work within a society is much more likely to survive in the wild and thus reach an evolutionary chain into the modern day as a descendant. That descendant will be inclined to work within groups as well and further pass on the trait due to it advantageous.

To go along with Ethan Hawkes point in the movie, I strangely decided i was goin to watch donnie darko and i significantly noticed and questioned in my head if he and that tobey mcguire guy from spiderman were brothers.... well literally like 4 days later wat do i see on the tv but those two are comin' out with a movie called "brothers" and they're brothers in their roles
haha i know right? i was watching this movie and i just before the guy said that i thought to myself something like "oh, i like how this movie gets philosophical without getting into any bullshit religious area" ... and then the guy proved me wrong with his collective consciousnes..
