Shinzen talks about how the deep mind, or subconscious can be reached and retrained through a body sensation feedback loop. Retreat and meditation conditions allow a kind of Skinnerian training of this reptilean brain into equanimity, which contributes to ordinary experience becoming spiritualized. Filmed in Nov. 2009 at Mt. Carmel Spiritual Centre in Niagara Falls.

  • I'd like to hear more of this. The final statement about the God experience seemed a bit of a leap from what was previously stated. For clarity are you saying that if you focus awareness of the sensations of the body and allow these sensations without judgement you are training the reptilian brain to be less reactive, creating a feedback loop of acceptance?

  • It was like having two self and I'm still investigating where one willingness begins and the other ends. :)

I don't know why now it is a lot more difficult to feel his directions (that of my reptilian me :) )...

P.S. I don't think my reptilian brain has a self.... he really gave me the intuition of the joy of living the present moment

  • as I started meditating I had to deal with my reptilian brain, for a week I had to give it time to disentangle all my body ( I do not know if I can call them kriyas) I found that the sensations (touch, feel) were asking for movements and I simply follow, very slowly, step by step. To follow these istructions required a lot of attention, and my impression was that my reptilian brain was teaching me :) : at the end my neck and shoulders, always so contracted where "free" for the first time

  • Great talk. Well thought out novel. THANK YOU.
