Splitting lumber with black powder

From Popular Woodworking magazine, they had a HUGE tree trunk too big for the sawmill that needed to be split into chunks small enough to make something out of. The solution? Black powder explosives!

Thanks for the proof of ignorance. The tree is being recycled into useful products after being felled by weather. There were no saws big enough to cut it. Why don't you be a little less know-it-all and little more willing to learn?

Wow, I didn't know black powder was still used for anything like this. I figured professionally they would use "safer" slurry explosives instead of static sensitive propellants. Of course I suppose ANY amount of ANFO large enough to be detonated would have turned half this log into a million deadly toothpicks and sent the other half into town.
