@JBofBrisbane yeah well thats what I saw on national geographic...I can't say I would take their advice either LOL. Theres a lot of upward drafts inside of thunder head clouds that can cause some nasty turbulence (like you said), I dont think I would wanna get caught in that crap either. I really don't think turbulence can cause a plane to break up, maybe it can cause it to tilt it beyond normal flight capacity? Anyway doesn't matter, thunderstorms should always be avoided! haha

@lurchipoo - Most airliners can handle a lightning strike or two, but that's not the issue. Extreme turbulence can break up an aircraft in flight, and hail can do some serious damage as well. Safer to fly through a thunderstorm? Methinks not, and thousands of line pilots would probably agree.
