Wonder Boy... or Revenge of Drancon as it was called on the Game Gear... I always underestimated this game. A chubby caveman with primitive graphics... But it turned out that this game is awesome, much better than, for example, Psychic World. The graphics are ok, the levels are well done, good challenge, lots of secrets.
In each area you can find some luxury item (handbag, perfume...) after you pick up some fruit at a certain spot. It will transport you to a bonus level in the clouds where you gather hearts. Each stage also has a hidden letter that spells out S-E-G-A thus you are able to get one extra life per area from that. You find it by jumping (or shooting?) in a certain spot. So, if you like to play for a high score this game is for you with all the secret stuff to find for points.
The game is pretty long. it has nine areas with four stages each and if you find all 36 dolls (that are often hidden) you unlock a tenth area with four more stages. Most stages are not that hard IF you memorized them well (which is not as easy as it sounds), but there are a few spots that are extremely difficult. You also have a vitality meter that decreases over time and gets refilled by picking up fruit. This makes this already fast paced game even faster - which is good imo.
Wonder Boy (in its arcade form) has been ported to a lot of consoles and home computers including the Sega Master System, Sega Game Gear and Nintendo NES. For an excellent comparison between Sega's and Nintendo's 8-bit versions please check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qHCzE7BAUAA . I very much prefer this version over the NES one mostly because of the better looking sprites and the more pleasant colors. I find NES games all look washed out or as if you left something in the sun for months and the colors faded.
Anyway, this will be a playthrough of all Wonder Boy games released, at least for Sega consoles for now. Next I'll do an easier game though as this one took really long to learn and record as I wanted to do this without a continue. And the sequel to this game is atrociously difficult, it will take a while :( I'll hold back on it until I can do a real non-stop playthrough without continues and save states.
Oh, on a side note... for some reason the background in this game scrolls only smoothly if the video got 60 fps. For my other uploads I converted the 60 fps dump from the emulator to 25 for editing and it was fine. Doing it that way, however, caused some stuttering and blurring of the background that was really hard on the eyes. So I uploaded the video at full 60 fps which looks perfect, but youtube cuts it down to 30. If that results in an unpleasant viewing experience, I'm sorry, but there's nothing else I can do :(
adventure island. . is this a clone of it? because It was made by hudson, and this is like a power for power up gameplay. anyway i like Mr Higgins more than this kid but its cool having an adventure island for the go and for 2 dollars i cant complain

@TVindustries5000 Actually, it's vice versa. Wonder Boy was the original in the arcades. For some strange reason, Sega kept the rights on the name and character of Wonder Boy so Hudson changed those and created a very similar platformer with more advanced gameplay. I'm not a big fan of either, but I love the Wonder Boy sequels with more rpg elements.
