Benny Vargas life story in Latin music is an important one to know. Here is a man who debuted singing at the Jefferson Theater (early Chuchifrito Circuit Theater) at the age of eight (1960), shared the stage with Mon Rivera, trumpeters Doc Severinson (Tonight Show), Victor Paz (Fania All Star), Pedro "Puchi" Boulong (Alegre/Fania All Star) and pianist Hector Rivera ("At The Party") at the age of nine creating his own improvisations which left the legendary Mayaguez singer awestruck and then went on to be part of an orchestra at age 18 (Dax Pacem 1970) which today is considered one of the progenitos of Salsa. His story is not one full of drama, drugs and decadence but a tribute to being a Puerto Rican who felt the call of the musical muse early in his life and has never let that spirit die. Today's crop of young musical talents should pay attention to his recollections and drive because he is imbued with a life force that if studied could be emotionally transcendent. I'm not talking about a holy roller here but a funny, humble man who has paid his dues and has never let his heart go astray.
