Step-by-step video shows the entire process of how to clean a wild turkey in less than five minutes. Includes THE most important steps to gain easy access to the whole breast: exposing the breast meet with almost no plucking, popping the leg joint out of its socket and peeling the breast away from the crop.

I have shot more than 30 turkeys. Until I developed this routine, cleaning birds was a pain in the neck. Now it's a snap, even when field dressing using a headlamp and working in the rain.

I only breast out birds because 1) it lets me find any shot in the meat so I don't crack a crown and 2) the legs on these birds are tough to eat.

Note: I shot the bird less than 90 minutes earlier, and the temperature was 23 degrees. If the temperature had been hotter and/or the bird would have gone several hours before breasting out, I would have gutted it immediately and put it on ice if needed.

  • Glad you like the video. Of 33 birds I've killed, I had one fall bird that tasted like acorns (his crop was full of them). Never had any gamey issues, so I don't do any special preparation or soaking.

  • so you just cut out two breast meats on the turkey? and then you cook that?
