Nova episode on the Kasparov versus Deep Thought chess match in 1989. Deep Thought is the precursor to the IBM Deep Blue computer that beat Kasparov in 1997. Deep Blue is a precursor to the IBM DeepQA Watson computer to play in the gameshow Jeopardy! next month.

People featured:
GM Gary Kasparov
Feng Hsiung Hsu
Murray Campbell
Thomas Anantharam
GM Patrick Wolff
Michael Valvo
Allen Newell
Herbert Simon
Jonathan Schaeffer
GM Max Dlugy

Among the computer chess pioneers interviewed are Allen Newell and Herbert Simon. They came up with the first computer program to use alpha-beta pruning.

Neither Deep Blue nor Deep QA Watson are capable of cognition. That is, they both can't see the chess board nor recognize Alex Trebek's speech.
