"Lohan Asks the Way" is an elementary set in our school. Students learn basic hand techniques, body movement, and footwork. They also learn basic skills like fluidity of movement, breath control, and mental focus.

In other words, students are introduced to the "Six Harmonies" (六合, Liu He) right at the start of their kung fu training.

Students first learn to perform this set with picture-perfect form. Later, they learn to flow with the patterns. Finally, they add speed and force.

In our school, enjoying "Flowing Breeze Swaying Willows" at the end of a kung fu form is a signature feature. In essence, we use the kung fu set to generate an energy flow. At the end of the set, we let that energy flow freely. Finally, we bring the energy back to dantian.

This video shows me demonstrating the first stage of training, i.e. picture-perfect form. I take my time with each pattern in order to get the details perfect. In later stages, I would add flow, and finally force.

I hope you enjoy.

All the best,
Anthony Korahais

  • who is "lohan"?

  • "Lohan" (Luohan, 羅漢) is the Chinese word for "Arhat", which is the Sanskrit word for a person who has achieved enlightenment.

  • cool

ive always loved the forms of gung fu.

people don't realise their not ment to be used in combat, their ment to teach you balance, coordination, and speed. getting comfortable with your own body is the most important thing for a martial artist.

  • Kung Fu forms are most certainly meant for combat. Sadly, Kung Fu has greatly deteriorated over the last 100 years, and few people today know how to apply them. If you take a look at my website, you can read articles on the subject.

  • meant for combat a couple of a hundred years ago. what i mean to say is that things like the bow stance are obsolete. in fact its down right dangerous to execute against a seasoned and well versed combatant.

  • Because combat a couple hundred years ago was different? Well, it was in that they were fighting for life and death. The bow-arrow stance is a liability if you lack the skills to use it in combat. If you have the necessary skills, it gives you many advantages. And I'm speaking from experience, having been on both sides of this issue.

  • Fantastic Form!! I am subscribed!!

  • Thank you, that definitely brought the pages from Wong Kiew Kit's book to life! Very impressive, Sir!

  • @opticannon Its training not fighting, everything in life is a ceremony, your telling me boxers shouldnt tap gloves or show respect bekuz its a wasted ceremony that has nothing to do with fighting? Or Muay thai fighters waste there time with there Ram Muay before a fight? Its not like were taught to bow or shake hands before a street fight but we do in training. Its a daym video of a form, you act like hes going to salute some1 in a real fight, pointing out the obvious doesnt make u smart.

  • Watch a boxing match then pause it, n tell me what you see when they strike, Bow stances! Ignore all the internet critics there all probably angry fat former high school nerds who over analyze thinking there smart but cant comprehend combat in its highest degree. Gunpowder,Paper and many other technology that came out of ancient China in a time when Europe was in the dark ages, and people are trying to say the chinese for 1000s of years used something that didnt work? yeah right.

  • @opticannon as a boxer, and a former traditional MArtist I can say the bow and back stances ect and not obsolete.....its a transitional movement...In boxing from a neutral fighting stance everytime i throw a jab i lean forward into a bow stance, then back to neutral agian, and when someone attacks i lean back and my legs go into a backstance...In muay thai we use a Cat stance almost all the time. I use forms all the time, in boxing it called shadow boxing. =]

  • i know this form and the valuble lessons inside that are not so obviously seen.flowing zen, have you tried the matching forms right vs right AND right vs left.fun,fun,fun.

  • Hidden in the pattern are the four starting points of all basic hand attacks and blocks,

    if someone leapt 10 ft,

and black tigered you in the celiac (solar) plexus,

    you would know it.

the practitioner does seem a bit "wobbly" though.

    thank you for posting this.

  • forms are just to help you get better on fighting n that it because your not gonna remember everything in a fight just your best skill laters

  • and it's messed up man , lets say some kid comes in there to learn it and is basically taught how to get beat up . this is some old school fighting , which is able to be appreciated from an art stand point . but it's kind of like 30's style boxing , but older .

  • i agree , not one movement has gaurd . the false leg or cat stance has no balance . and he's just chopping around like some kind of robot . this is not "certainly for combat" unless you're supposed to interprete it a certain way . which in that case you'd waste your time doing forms you were not going to use. if someone actually did that in combat he would look like a dumb ass .
