@TootlinGeoff ..i have heard the show on resonance.fm here in london explaining that ET is "natural" .....the overtones in indian instruments are somewhat "natural" and all instruments were in ET, until some euro asshole made it sound not so mystical ...for the sake of...i didn't understand what....cause they did not explain well....if someone would kindly give me additional explanation i promise to read it with interest...i know classic music theory very well, i should be able to comprehend....
@ReturnToSound That's a problem with equal temperament. ET major thirds are somewhat sharp of the "perfect" interval and minor thirds slightly flat. It's not a lot, but enough to notice. Fourths and Fifths OTOH are very close to their perfect intervals so sound fine. With a chromatic scale, ET is probably the best compromise. Other temperaments would almost certainly make some intervals so bad as to be even more unplayable. They used to be known as "wolf" intervals at one time.
