Because MI is defined in the DSM-4 by observable behaviors and not specific physical conditions, there is no "physical" basis involved in the classification of mental disorders. Because we do not know the underlying cause or causes my belief is that we are lumping together conditions with different causes but similar symptoms together and calling them the "same" illness. This means there is inconsistency in the effectiveness of treatments. More research is needed.
