To make junctions safer many roundabouts were created. In this video you can see how drivers and cyclists interact on a Dutch roundabout with a separate cycle path. The cyclists have the right of way. There is no separate law for that. Cyclists have priority simply because they are on the roundabout and the drivers enter and leave the roundabout. Traffic on the roundabout has the right of way so that is the cyclists. Special is that the cyclists can go two ways on the cycle path of the roundabout. That took some getting used to by drivers. This example is in the city of 's-Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands.

Another roundabout in the same city can be seen in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tYpiMjmhJB0

  • ye this is what we need in ireland so badly

  • Utopia. I'm voting the Green Party for the purley selfish reason, I want more proper cycle paths so I can cycle everywhere relaxed like this canny lot.

  • Motorists in England, particularly London do not and will never give a sh!t about cyclists. So may times, i almost get squashed, cut up, have doors open on me. so far, no accidents, but how long can i read the minds of motorists, i don't know. There is one cycle that i use that i see constantly being used by cars.

  • I have seen a similar roundabout in England, but the people on the cyclepath didn't have right of way over the cars on the approaching lanes, thus making it potentially lethal.

Think of all the money wasted on planning and approval meetings, when in fact a £19 Easyjet flight to the Netherlands would allow them to just copy what the Dutch have done in a far superior way!

  • Great timing in posting this video. I was recently editing the Cycling section of the Roundabout article on Wikipedia. I posted pictures on how cyclists are accommodated on a couple of roundabouts in Arizona, United States. I think there might be a way to link to this video from that article to demonstrate some of the text there.
