Firestone Complete Auto Care recommends that each month, you take a moment to check your tires for signs of wear. When it comes to your tires, remember three simple steps: inflate, rotate and evaluate.

Its very simple to check your tires for wear. You dont need any special tools. In fact, you probably already carry a tire inspection device with you every day in your pocket. Simply insert a penny into the tire tread, with Lincolns head pointing down. You need at least 1/16th inch of tread on your tire for minimum safety. If you can see the top of Lincolns head during your penny test, the tread is worn and you should probably replace your tires.

Rotation is also important to tire safety, and it can help save you money. Check your owners manual for the recommended rotation schedule.

Each tire wears differently. In most vehicles, the front wheels work harder because they do the vehicles turning and most of the braking. The rear wheels are often unevenly loaded. When you rotate your tires regularly, the wear patterns on the tires even out, so your tires should last longer. This can go a long way toward helping your bank accounts bottom line.
