Although in 1845 there was no definition or a binding document concnerning genocide, if we take the today's definition as it is stipulated in Article II of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide under part (c):
"Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part"
it is clear that an Gorta Mór (the great Famine) was a genocide...
