Mike did play his own music. It was well documented by everyone associated with the Monkees' music that Mike did not really care for the "sugar pop" sound produced by Don Kershner. So Mike fought for the right to get his compositions (including this one) on the albums and he produced, sang, and played on his songs separately from the other music with only Peter helping play guitar and bass on Mike's tracks. (and Mickey and Davy contributing vocals as needed).
