Don't think it has any advantages other than that the body don't have to create melanin for that particular body part. It's just an happening that had no adverse effects thus natural selection did not select against people with blue eyes.

I think the melanin in the eyes are the same as that in the skin. That's why mostly white people have blue eyes, cause the gene was turned off to allow UV light to effect our skin more thus allowing more production of vitamin D. The genes are different for skin color pigmentation and eyes, we've seen that people come with a variety of different eye/skin color, but perhaps by accident the eye melanin gene was turned off, and since UV isn't as strong up here it had no adverse effects.
