Back in Jeffersonville, IN, amp guru Doc Electro shows off one of his prized "Class A" Combo amps, one of the most accurately-named amps we've ever come across. The tone that this 20-watt, class A combo cranks out is like a mating call for country and blues guitarists.

The good doctor uses the "Class A" as a jumping off point for a pointed discussion about the finer points of point-to-point, hand-built, analog amplifiers. It may seem like a little bit of audio Luddism to some, but that's sort of the point.

  • i just made a class A amplifier from scratch, only needs 2 pots, 1 capacitor, 2 resistors and 1 darlington NPN transistor. and I can't seem to find any clippings in a 1000Hz signal under an oscilloscope.

  • I like the vibe of this gentleman he looks like Sam Kinison and thats cool too.

I just bought an amp from another great indiana builder Valvetech... I may have to check out Doc next..

  • This is interesting, but SUX because there is no SOUND CLIPS!!! WTF?? I tried here, gear wire, docelectro. This is stupid (sorry). I/we'd like CLIP(S). Please post. Maybe you can sell a few! Thanks in advance.

  • class D works allmost just as good for sound purposes. Of course, D generates a little more distortion and etc. but have in return the capability of delivering more power, and then again reducing for instance the negative effects of, for instance frequency response. and you won't risk finding your home burnt to the ground if you forget to turn off the power.

  • lol class A is ineffecient, big and should never be used anymore. The A class is also a known for causing fires ignited by the large amount of heat generated from it. Having a C A amp is a nice way to burn down your house. Be sure to get class A insurance before buying a class a amp, lol.

  • His amps rock. I bought one off him a little over a year ago and it's the best thing I've ever played through. And he's great to work with, will build exactly what you want.

  • in the past 5-10 years? try like last 40. im really young and know this.

  • That's all great but it would of been nice to hear it.
