An unlikely celebrity in the shape of an octopus called Paul with psychic powers has emerged from the World Cup whose accuracy at predicting match results is gaining him a cult following.

Paul who resides in a tank at Sea Life aquarium in Oberhausen, Germany, has correctly predicted all of Germany's World Cup results -- including their 1-0 defeat against Spain last night.

The two-year-old octopus -- who was actually born in Weymouth in England, predicted Germany's wins against England and Argentina, and even Serbia's defeat of Germany in the group stage.

Such is the popularity of his selections that, on the eve of last night's game, the German news channel n-tv broadcast Paul's prediction live, reports the Guardian.

Paul's handlers at the German aquarium have turned him into a betting phenomenon by putting mussels into two glass boxes. One box has Germany's flag on it, while the other carries the flag of their opponents. Paul is then left to choose one box to open to retrieve the mussel.

But not everyone is apparently a fan of Paul. After Argentina lost to Germany in the quarter-final, Argentines threatened to kill the octopus and put him in a paella.

Bookmaker William Hill is so impressed by Paul's powers of prediction that it was offering even odds that he will pick the winner of the final on Sunday, between Spain and Holland.
