The International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) condemns the violence occurred during the storming by the Iraqi forces on July 28th 2009, of Camp Ashraf, where reside thousands of members of the People's Mojahedeen Organization of Iran (PMOI), an opposition group to the Iranian regime. FIDH calls upon the authorities of Iraq to respect the physical and mental integrity of the residents of Camp Ashraf and rule out officially and unequivocally the risk of extradition and expulsion to Iran where they may face torture and persecution, the statement issued by the French based human rights group said on Friday.
Residents at an Iraqi camp for Iranian dissidents have started a hunger strike to protest against alleged human rights abuses inflicted by Iraqi security forces this week, amid fears that the Iranian regimes influence is growing in the Iraqi government. On Tuesday, Iraqi police entered Camp Ashraf in Diyala province, where, according to residents, they attacked an unarmed group of people with machine guns and batons, killing 12 and seriously wounding 500.
