In the summer of 2009, The Residents made three decisions. One was to clean house. This decision led to the release of the futurist compilation CD, Ten Little Piggies. Second was the realization that the best statement of their current self view was a bunch a recordings that had been recorded earlier for an album called The Voice of Midnight. This decision led to the release of the album, The Ughs!

The third decision was to play a new live show on Halloween. This was to be the opportunity to experiment with new ideas and directions. The show was never announced but it was booked for the Rio in Santa Cruz, The Residents home-away-from-home, for Saturday, October 31.

=====
They couldn't quite get it together by October 31 and then the holidays arrived. The Halloween show was postponed but is finally making it to the Rio January 23rd, 2010. The show is called Talking Light.

The story of the Talking Light piece is basically that of an older man who questions, not only decisions he made as a teenager, but also if the events he remembers from that time happened at all. "A dead infant clutching a ring with an inscription the teenager cannot read" is the stuff of dreams. The following stories in the show may or may not shed light on the inscription. Questions remain unanswered. The Residents study death, not as a horrific end, but as the ultimate question that we all ask while wondering if any of it is even real.

  • That is WITHOUT A DOUBT Adrian Belew playing guitar.

  • @erix - Actually its not Adrian, it is Nolan Cook. Adrian is awesome though.

  • I watch this every day

  • @rhetrozenberg - Did you watch it today? :)

  • The Talking Light screams out for a pro-shoot!

    History deserves it!

  • @Gretnoid1 - I agree fully, I can only hope!

  • God herself took Snakefinger at a young age because she wanted geetar lessons. Nobody can compare to Snakefinger, NOBODY. that being said, Bob on guitar was kick ass. He has his own style and makes no attempt to copy Snakefinger. From my perspective at the Austin show, Bob on guitar was mind blowing. Randy is 65 and out on an international tour. That's brass. Chuck over there on keyboards..... words can't even describe him, I won't try.

  • I saw them last night at the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art and let me say- Fantastic

  • anyone who knows THEM knows Homers voice... why is this an issue? FYI, I have a shitload of original Ralph stuff fer sale... buy or I'll die...

  • confirmative!

  • @siys Why you gotta be hatin?

  • @siys Word!

  • O what hath John Cage wrought...

  • hm it looks like Homer Flynn, shows more and more of his face in every show...

I wonder how much longer he will carry on

    not admitting his ...residential character...

  • I think it's a shame that this show will be shortened to 60 minutes for the Minehead Festival in the UK. It's an expensive weekend too. It would be nice if they did an extra gig in the North of England, but I don't suppose they will.

  • I think The Singing Resident was still getting a feel for the songs & lyrics this show. Things seemed much tighter at the San Diego performance. Either way this is still a great song and one of the better video captures I've seen from the tour.

  • The Bunny Boy marked a departure from The Story Teller Era. The Story Teller Era - to my knowledge - never had an album that went on tour. Instead The Residents used stories & conceptual art in packaging to promote the CD as a dying medium. They're entering into something completely different now and MP3s are the way of the future (as far as The Residents are concerned.) As a side note, I thin Nolan Cook is great. If you think his style is one dimensional you should really look-up his band GBD.

  • At the risk of feeding into your pathetic attention grab, consider this: Maybe you should stick to relating opinions you're actually qualified to to give. Like the comparing the new Dominos pizza versus the old... something like that.

  • @siys - Did cook pee in your cheerios? :) Sounds like you have personal issues against cook anyways. For me even though I love Cook's (Loved Demons Dance Alone tour!) guitar playing, I have never thought of residents as a guitar oriented band, or even a band I listen to for specific riffs etc. It plays more of a role as keyboard/noise in the rez band is what I notice.

Sounds like you just no longer like the rez, and that's fine. There's a time to move on for some.

Rez is still like no other

  • I have been a Residents fan for 33 years, have everything they have ever released and then some, and seen all tours through Icky Flix, except the Mole Show. I loved the 13th Anniversary Show so much I flew to another city to see it again and one of the absolute highlights was seeing Snakefinger, as he was phenomenal. Opinions are subject and I am not saying my opinion is the only one, but Cook isn't fit to even be considered a guitar player compared to Snakefinger. I love all music, sans Cook!

  • @siys - Everyones a critic :) I for one love Nolan Cook's style, just as I loved Snakefinger who had a unique signature sound in similar fashion. If Residents are not living up to your expectations, maybe you need to remember not to have any expectations when it comes to the rez :)

I saw them twice, in Santa Cruz and in San Diego. The San Diego show was even better than this one I think! I put the stories up because they are newest (and weirdest). They did plenty of older material as well

  • Pure crap! This storytelling phase has been a huge disappointment. Even as performance art this is extremely weak. Nolan Cook is one of the worst guitar players I've ever heard and I am not alone in this opinion. His one-dimensional everything-sounds-the-same style is intolerable. Homer Flynn has lost his flair and sings with a total lack of passion. Hardy Fox should continue as a solo act or the one remaining Resident, as he is the only one with loads of talent and something worth listening to.

  • Yes!!! It was over too soon, but yes, it was incredible. It was great to see them again. I was sorry to see Carlos gone though I've heard he formed an avant-garde mariachi band in Mexico. Damn, I love the Residents!

  • nope I would say you were just super lucky. Sorry to hear about the sound quality, sucks... have you checked the soundboards on the residents website? They were planning to sell each night on the site. It usually has samples too, so if its better quality, may be worth the purchase for the memory and a better version of audio. Could be bad too though...

Anyways I saw them in San Jose and San Diego (California) and Molly was not at either show,

  • It was cool seeing her. But again the sound quality was so bad it could have been anyone up there. Is she following the tour?
