The following project is for De Anza's Fall 2009 ELIT/ICS 24 Class.
[for some reason, audio ALWAYS overlaps at the first 20 seconds, but is fine for the rest]
Prompt: Building on the "lifeboat" exercise, develop a creative project that highlights your cultural, familial, and/or individual value.
Inspiration came from during class where one of the exercises was the Kumulipo, the story of creation. At first, I thought of it to be extremely linear, focusing solely on the creation of the world. However, I thought it was interesting how it didn't literally ned to be about that creation story, rather the creation of memories. By sharing what was important to each and every one of us, not only did it become something we remember, but something to live by.
In the art of the Kumulipo, we come to recall the memories we do not want to forget. As we move on with our lives, we tend to forget those things of the past. But, it is always important to remember. The experiences, the people, and the relationships forged are what make us who we are in the first place. We should cherish every moment.
This project changed from a short story film to a montage of clips accumulated over the past year. While the Kumulipo is the recital of words, I decided my take on it would be that of a visual representation of clips and pictures.
Thanks for watching!
