How easy is it for children to buy cigarettes in pubs? Unchallenged?
This British Heart Foundation video podcast lays bare the disturbing facts.
It's the latest part of our campaign for an immediate ban on the sale of cigarettes from vending machines.

  • If these machines are banned that won't stop kids getting hold of cigarettes, because their families parents, friends (and even strangers) will hand them out to children and also adults go into shops and buy them for kids so if you are going to ban them from vending machines you might as well ban them from shops and retailers too. It's either all or nothing.

  • I don't agree with the banning of cigarette vending machines. I believe that they should be in prominent view of the bar, with scary warnings of them, and notices of fines and that it is illegal etc. Then impose fines on pubs willingly allowing under 18's using the machine.

Or allow pubs to sell cigarettes, then they can ID people easily on purchases. I believe this is currently illegal, except for cigars, I am unsure why. It would solve all the problems of these vendors.

  • @DougieLawson The problem with that is you can get a chip and pin card at about age 12 / 13 I think. I certainly had a debit card by the time I was 13 or 14 as I'd already opened my own eBay / Paypal / Amazon accounts by then for online shopping. (this was about 4 - 5 years ago)

  • surely this is just showing kids that theres a place that you can just get cigarettes without being challenged?

  • lawls jst cause u got 2 kids who are good at hiding means notyhing

  • no dont bann thum

  • Well done to everybody involved in this video! Love how that last pub's sign was obscured.

  • The answer isn't banning cigarette machines, it's simply converting them so they only take a chip'n'pin card.

That means the adult smokers can still actively kill themselves but kids can't get at them.
