One thing to consider is, after the 60's and especially after Hoover died, major assasinations came to an end. So that is something to think about as well. Whoever was behind these events thought that into the 70's was a good time to stop it or they got rid of the people they needed to get rid of. On top of that, the US likes to have us bleieve that these things only happen in other countries. I do not recall hearing about a Soviet, Communist leader being shot down in a power grab.

Clyde Tolson applied to the FBI and was rejected.Then J Edgar Hoover saw his photo with his application,I guess Hoover liked what he saw & Tolson was hired by the FBI and in a very short time he Hoover's Deputy Director and constant companion.THey vacationed together and are even buried next to each other.

Hoover's sexual proclivity wasn't the problem. The problem was that the mob, probably Lansky, gathered evidence about it (revealing photo's) and threatened to publish this unless the FBI left the mob alone. If this were the case then others might have had the same hold on him too. Perhaps this is the perverse reason behind him being kept in power for so long.
