@secodrvr It's really a shame though, as awesome as these cars have proven to be. The engines have become so under-appreciated. If I go to a car show, usually someone asks me if it's a big block, and what's up with the funky heads. I honestly don't see what's so great about Chevelles, Camaros, and Novas, what did they do that the 409 hadn't already done? If only they knew. I guess people are too easily impressed with bigger numbers.
@4thstooge Over rated ??? please.... 409's cleaned upt he track with the chrysler maw wedge. they broke records, and set the pace for many cars to come. Yes, the 409's were prone to have weak rods, but Chevrolet as well as aftermarket manufacturer's offered " racing " rods for these engines if they were destined for the track. the 409 definately beat the max wedge more than the other way around. Also in '63 and '64, a z-11 impala won the nationals. look it up. And yes, she is so fiiiiine !!!!!
@66bowtiegal Bowtiegal, you seem to know a good bit about w-engines. but there are a few things you need to be corrected on. The W engine was not a wedge engine. Actually, these engines did not incorporate a combustion chamber in the cylinder head. It was actually made up by the piston, that basically had a wedge cut out of it, made possible with a tall crow, along with the engine have a small recess in the top of the cylinder. this made up the " quench " area, AKA combustion chamber.
409's were overrated They weren't even the best of their era. The Max Wedge Plymouth's & Dodge's blew them away then & today. The nasty secret about 409's that you don't hear is that they frequently blew up and spewed their engine parts all over the track. She's so fine my 409 ? The car didn't live up to it's billing.
@hammerogod The 409/409...which was really rated at 425hp by GM was probably a LOT more than 500hp... this is the 409 car the Beach Boys sang about, the QB coded 1962 factory dual quad (aluminum intake & a pair of Carter AFB carbs, steel crank), 4 Speed, posi-traction...409. These QB cars are pretty rare examples of the HP wedge motor that Chevrolet produced for one year only, and yeah...bring all your cash, assets, your best friend's and neighbor's too -lol!
The HP of the stock 409's was underated for insurance purposes, when they were put on a Dyno they almost always produced closer to 500 HP ... Chevy engineers admitted this fact later .. There are still a ot of them around but bring all your cash and assets if you plan to buy one.
