This is an artistic representation in wood inspired by John Harrison's grasshopper clock escapement design at 1726. A bag of stones drives a big wooden gear which in turn drives a small pinwheel which is part of the big 10 pin escapewheel. My aim was to test out the maximum limits of a grasshopper escapement which would still be functional in its movement and doing so, would create an artistic effect. When it is at about 1.8 m mounted to a wall or something it will run for about 75 min. with quite a slow oscillation of almost 5 sec.
I had to dempen the movement of the horizontal pendulum with some rubber bands connected to the pallet holder mechanism for it to function well, which resulted in a nice and slow, calm movement of the mechanism.
