The historical P51 Mustang suffered landing gear failure during a joy flight from Point Cook RAAF base near Melbourne. Pilot and passenger escaped uninjured, but it is highly probable a change of underwear post landing would be required.
@RoadRunnerDrummerJD Changing its pitch to beyond full course. ie the blades are perpendicular to relative flow and the prop stops spinning. It reduces drag. Has nothing to do with the engine.
Great mindset from the pilot, and great attitude from the passenger. Hope to see the P51 back up and airborne soon.

It dosen't look like the Mustang was damaged too badly and is repairable.Which is good news.

@RoadRunnerDrummerJD Basically shutting it down

While the book "may" suggest a shut down, experience tells a pilot to leave it idling with the fuel valve shut..
nothing worse then belly-landing with a prop blade pointed at the ground.

What exactly is "feathering" a propeller?
RoadRunnerDrummerJD 3 years ago
it isn't possible to glide for very long in the p-51 because its wing needed lots of speed to stay up

Awesome job.
How much water do you think the firemen sprayed in the stacks?
Oh, well. It's good to be alive.
Gotta do the motor anyway, so some warped valves are the least of his problems, eh?

Why didnt he shut down and feather the propeller before bellylanding it? (if thats even possible in a Mustang)
