I have a question. Does the accumulation of chalk have any long term effect to the rock? Does it wash off with the rain? or does it continue to build up?

Hello chilligut,
The accumulation of chalk does have a long term effect on the rock (depending on the type of rock). The rain and snow can wash a little bit the ticks and the holds, but roofs and steep routes are not touched by the rain. That's why most of the top-level climbers are brushing the holds after climbing.
