This jazz solo, to a Sid Caesar tune from Little Me, was choreographed by Ilya Gaft and danced by Greg Bomke.

Correction, with thanks to ronspivak: Although Sid Caesar starred in the original Broadway production of LITTLE ME, this was not actually his song. The vocalist is Swen Swenson, and the music and lyrics are by Cy Coleman and Carolyn Leigh, respectively.

  • Too much ballet influence in the choreography. For instance, the typical ballet tool of repeating the same sequence of steps 3-5 times in a row (whether they fit the music/plot/lyrics or not), which is a way of showcasing a highly technical dancer's skills and stamina, doesn't really go with the stage musical format. That said, the dancer has excellent technique and can spot like nobody's business. Just remember, a derby hat does not jazz make. Cheers!

  • @bobbymoya Excellent observation! The choreographer was Russian, a former ballet dancer with the Kirov, and I'm fairly certain he was choreographing to the sound of the song rather than to the lyrics or the intent in the context of the show. Thanks for watching and commenting. :)

  • Why do all the fat guys think they're gonna be dancers nowadays?

  • Perhaps we hope that audiences will appreciate us as dancers, rather than being incredibly shallow and unnecessarily insulting?

  • This is not a "Sid Caesar tune." True, Sid Caesar starred in the original Broadway production of LITTLE ME, but he did not write it, nor was this even his number in the show! In fact, Greg is dancing to the Original Broadway Cast Recording, and the vocalist you hear is Swen Swenson, who sang and danced this number on Broadway in 1962. The lyrics are by Carolyn Leigh and the music is by Cy Coleman, both famous Broadway songwriters who deserve proper credit. Nevertheless, nice dance, Greg.

  • Wow! Thanks for the clarification, and the compliment. :)

  • Thank you so much for putting this up! Ilya Gaft is my Grandfa...i can't wait to tell him this is on here!

I do feel that the choreography was done to the music, not the lyrics..but that may just be me. And only my Grandfather truly knows...<_<

    Thanks again,

    QLF

  • @ronspivak Thanks for saying exactly what I was going to. Love that Swen Swenson! Wish I could go back in time and watch him perform this in the show. Nice an effort as this one is (and it does have some charm, and lots of heart), I suspect Swen burned up the stage, just as he burns up the stereo whenever I listen to this song.

  • Oh and you're not fat. The person who said that is probably sitting in his basement eating Cheetos and typing at the same time, frustrated that he can't and never will be able to get enough height for a full jeté

  • @Owlzindabarn he was a pro, in fact, and I'm not sure where you're getting fat from. jeez. sorry, I shouldn't feed the troll.

  • who's in the play?

  • yes the full play
