I'm more familiar with Shirley Bassey's version and I feel Bassey's version requires more voice technique because it has more vocal range. This one sounds rather dated. I assume Gloria was just doing it for the moment. Shirley's is classical and timeless.

But this song was only sung by Gloria, she's not written it, because I AM WHAT I AM was written by Harvey Fierstein for the musical "LA CAGE AUX FOLLES", which it's one of the most knowing gay-musical in the world. As a gay man, anything that gets our songs out there is a good thing, IMABHO. Besides, if straight women get to sing our songs and make them their own, we get to sing THEIR songs and make them OUR own.
