@crownvictoria71 If the lava-like Radioactive graphite had burned its way through below the Reactor before they drained the container then an absolutely horrific thermonuclear explosion would of been triggered wiping out vast areas of land around it and would of basically turned Europe into a wasteland. It just had to be done, no questions. And yes many people still don't know what happened there or understand what the liquidators and soldiers did to stop it from escalating into total oblivion.

@UnbreakableKGB Thank you for your comment. I could not agree with you more. I have spent many an hour studying the Chernobyl NPP accident. Extreme acts of bravery by many thousands of men whom unfortunately, largely go un-noticed. Nations across the globe owe them a great deal. I singled out these two particular men for many reasons. They effectively averted 'a greater disaster' and sacrificed their lives to save millions. How many people could truthfully say they would rise up and do it!

@crownvictoria71 They knew what they'd be giving up, but so did their fellow Comrades which made them feel at ease. Truly brave and selfless people who deserve our remembrance, model Soviets.

@crownvictoria71 They died for their Motherland (Soviet or not) and maybe just the whole world.
