The melons probably didn't grow because you put the torches right over them. Got hit by something similar myself. According to the wiki, they don't grow if they have anything in the block right above them.

I found a chest in a stronghold that had 3 diamonds 3 red apples and 5 iron ingots

The creepy music/sound plays when you are within 13 blocks of an at least 3x3 space that has a light level of 0.

@VintageBeef notch should add in a secret friday update that 1 of every 30 creepers that spawn it will be invisible but makes a sort of ripple in the air like the cloaking from predators
