A short gameplay video which shows a Level 1 party being ambushed by a few goblins.

For those of you who (like myself) are a bit too young to have been involved in serious CRPG gaming in the late 1980s, I should perhaps point out that "Pool of Radiance" was a hugely influential AD&D computer role playing game, featuring an innovative turn-based combat system. PoR was released on several platforms, including the Commodore 64, PC and NES. The game engine was used in several later titles, which are known collectively as the "Gold Box" games.

  • What were the all the names of the game in the series?

  • @bluntd1 According to Wikipedia, the total list of Gold Box games (including all the different settings such as Forgotten Realms, Dragonlance etc.) reads as follows; Pool of Radiance Curse of the Azure Bonds Secret of the Silver Blades Pools of Darkness Forgotten Realms Unlimited Adventures Gateway to the Savage Frontier Treasures of the Savage Frontier Neverwinter Nights Champions of Krynn Death Knights of Krynn The Dark Queen of Krynn Countdown to Doomsday Matrix Cubed
  • I have the entire series, but can't run them on any machine I have. Shame really. I did always enjoy them.

  • These games run just fine in DOSBox on any PC or Mac.

  • @Tamalain you can use dosbox to run them or find downloads of the games that have been modified to play on modern computers.

  • This was soooo great!!! I wished that still that kind of role playing games would be produced! I don't like the nowadays "RPGs", because they are more or less just action games. A real RPG needs strategic round based fights with no time limit. Then it becomes being like a chess game! So good!!!

  • I absolutely loved these "gold box" games. I had them all for the Commodore 64....and still do to this day. Just seeing this brings back alot of great memories.

  • Ah OK, thanks! I would have never guessed it. I grew up playing the NES version and you only had gold on that version.

  • @Doommaster1994 As soon as you purchase something your money is automatically converted to the best denomination.

  • Try WinUAE with the Amiga version of the last few games...64 colors & digital sound effects :)
