The F-35B short takeoff/vertical landing variant completed ship suitability testing aboard the USS WASP (LHD-1) off the coast of Virginia in October 2011. Combined, F-35B test aircraft BF-2 and BF-4 accomplished 72 short takeoffs and 72 vertical landings during the three-week testing period.

@weirdguy564 the A model has an internal 25mm cannon while the B&C models have the external gun pod.

@Weibkoln Yet every country with small carriers wants it. Spain, Italy, Thailand, India, US Marine Corps, even Britain. They all use Harriers for now, and the F-35 is the only choice if you want to replace your old, worn out planes. Harriers are not built anymore either.
Even Japan and South Korea have "helicopter" carriers, but a Harrier or F-35 could be used from them.

@tikiyizi2 F-22 is twin engine, has bigger radar, faster, and is only used on land.
F-35 is single engine, smaller radar, no gun (does have an optional gun pod), and has three variants to choose from. C-model is carrier plane with strong landing gear, tail hook, long folding wings, extra fuel tank behind cockpit. B-model is vertical take off, and has a lift fan behind the cockpit. A-model is air force, and is simpler than the other two.

You can just see that this variant would be very very high maintenance

@tikiyizi2 Freaking everything?
F-35B = bombtruck with one-engine that can do vertical takeoff, designed more for A2G then A2A
F-22A = fighter designed purely for A2A, faster, more powerful, more expensive
