Creminem!
Watching the Super Bowl in Detroit, I found the Eminem/Chrysler/Detroit ad simultaneously awesome, surreal, and thought-provoking. It's some combination of being surprised that a TV commercial at the Super Bowl seemed to have more emotional impact on my friends here than any other media piece about Detroit (and the internet blew up with the same sentiment); that cars and punch-you-in-the-face were laid out as the future again, with Eminem driving; that my friend Ken in Portland via Tokyo worked on the hyper-local spot; and that (amongst other pieces of the media matrix)...drum roll...it reminded me of the ambient build-up pacing and architecture-as-character style of Matthew Barney's Cremaster Cycle. Here then, is the Cremaster trailer (sped up 75%) overlaid with Chrysler audio, which is probably about as weird as the real future of Detroit is going to be, given...well...EVERYTHING. :-)
From http://cremasterfanatic.com/Synopsis3.html
"The bulk of Cremaster 3 is set in New York during the construction of the Chrysler Building in 1930. At the time, the Chrysler Building and the Bank of Manhattan Building were both vying to be the world's tallest skyscraper. The Bank of Manhattan Builiding was designed to be 927 feet hign - two feet taller than the Chrysler Building. Shortly before its completion, a secret 18-foot Nirosta steel spire was raised atop the Chrysler Building, making it the taller building."

PS Matthew Barney's next film takes place in Detroit. No word yet on if Chrysler is sponsoring.
Nice work!
