@Talshet it is nowhere near as easy as it looks on video games,the sidewinder can pull up to 30G turns,no plane can outmaneuver that. and because of the angle long range missiles would come in from(and the speed)there would be a microscopic chance you would be able to outmaneuver it. and in modern warfare long range missiles win battles in operation RED FLAG the overwhelming majority of all kills were achieved by missiles,not guns,if they were so easy to outmaneuver then that wouldnt be the case

@hotpocketpoison Radar range make a plane not automaticly better. When a missile is fired on jet, instruments will show him for 60km++ that he is locked and launched. MiG and Sukhoi can outmaneuvrable most of long range missiles and jam them with technologies like the 100 meter cable on EuroFighter or just Flares/Chaffs. The most shot down Fighters are from Anti Aircraft Forces or in Dogfight not from long range missiles.

@hotpocketpoison No idea.

@OldDirtyRatbastard capability wise the F-18E and the MiG-29K are virtually equal. the F-18 leads in some categories and the MiG-29K leads in others,but the F-18E costs about $10million more. the only thing i dont understand is why the designers only gave the MiG-29K 100 rounds of ammunition(the F-18E has about 580),it doesnt seem smart making a plane for dogfighting and not giving it many rounds for its cannon,then again the rounds are significantly larger than the F-18E or any American planes.

@hotpocketpoison And also, the carrier Mig-29 actually has excellent air to ground capabilities and radar range, but it indeed is no longer cheap, in fact it's more expensive than the F-18C and just under the E.

@hotpocketpoison No. An AWACS plane should be powerful enough to provide targeting data to its wings of fighters beyond the range of their own radar. They shouldn't even have to turn their radar on at all, so the only thing that determines engagement range in such a situation is that of the missiles.
Also, i just checked some documentation about the German (now Polish) Mig-29s... And everything bad that can be said about their radar is well deserved. What a piece of crap.

@OldDirtyRatbastard but with the F-18s longer radar range, having the AWACS on both sides would still benefit the F-18s, because they would still slightly outrange the MiG-29s and be able to shoot first and thus get the first kills and have a much better chance of winning.

@hotpocketpoison No contest about air to ground, the F-18 may be the most versatile fighter there is. As some guy said : there is a better plane for anything a F-18 can do, but there is no plane that can do everything better.
Also, more correctly, BVR : F-18C>Mig-29A
Well search more, i must have gone through 100 google pages to find the discussion. Sounds only logical anyway, having AWACS in the air reduces the impact of the fighter's onboard radar performance.
Unfortunately for 5th generation fighters like the F-22, stealth capabilities no longer make much sense. Anti air radar, and optic electronics have advanced too much The costs to operate planes like the Raptor are shockingly high at over $44,000 per hour! Ground crews are also complaining that maintaining the F-22 is a nightmare, requiring 30 hours to every 1 hour the Raptor is in the sky.Russia's SU-35, MiG-29/35, and America's F-15, F-16, and F-18 will be around for a long time.
