Portland State University researchers hauled Columbia River water to Lake Mead to assess how well invasive quagga and zebra mussels can grow in it. The water has lower levels of calcium than some other rivers, which might affect mussel growth. The research results will help assess the Columbia's vulnerability to the prolific mussels and prioritize efforts to keep them from invading the Northwest.
