@RabidCh it's really a mindset that the pianist accepts naturally. it takes comtemplation and depth of thought. Very few seem to have it these days. : )

London, 4 march 1957...
This interpretation is amazing and you must remember that is a live recording.
Michelangeli used to say "you have to prepare yourself at 110% to give the 80% during the concert". If this is his 80% I can't imagine his 100%...

i think understanding structure and knowing how to phrase and when to use rubato is not related to technique, its more musicality and intelligence to me. technique is more like... knowing how to do it, bringing the piano (or instrument) to its fullest (personal) extent, of course everybody can imagine a somewhat ideal sound of the piece in mind, but not everybody can actually play it like that! so that is what i think about when i think of technique. the ability to achieve.

@RabidCh my definition of technique is as follows:
1. hitting right/wrong notes is about 15%
2. Concentration on the sound of EVERY note
3. Understanding the climax of a piece and building towards that otherwise the structure droops
4. Color palette and the ability to use ALL 3 pedals to create a myriad of different sounds
5. PHRASING- ABM phrases scales and arpeggios like no other. they are part of the structure
6. Rubato- know how much and when to use it
and so SO much more
-
but its more than just technique!

@hadsell1962 thank god someone who understands what REAL technique is. FINALLY!

Makes Hamelin look silly.............
To me technique is coupled with musicianship. they are inseperable. Technique is more a product of the mind than the fingers. David Dubal said of Artur Schnabel, " one senses an artist who wants to free himself of the manual exigencies of technique. Besides the greatest test of technique is to be able to hold the listeners interest and Schnabel was a master at that." Go to a conservatory. NOBODY SOUNDS LIKE SCHNABEL. They can hit alot of right notes though. lol
