how do you put different sound bites over videos?

i don't use windows movie maker any more, but what you do is you split the music clip wherever you want the voiceovers to go.

then you drag the clip of sound that you want in between the two split clips. then you drag the voice clip left so that it overlaps the music clip about half way. then you click and drag the remaining music clip left until in overlaps the voice clip completely.

I use Windows and I can't make it that good. Check some of my out they suck. To get the voice overs I have to make them in a seperate video and add them to the video that way. Is that what you do?
