As a custom home builder, I'm often asked what makes the most difference when it comes to energy efficiency. Most people think it's insulation, which is partially correct. My answer - a thorough caulk/seal package and insulation. Before we insulate a home, our crews use caulk and expandable spray foam to close all gaps around windows, doors, electric boxes, framing gaps, venting pipes, etc., that could allow the transfer of air from inside to outside and vice-versa. Then we add a quality insulation such as cellulose, blown-in fiberglass (BIBS) or Icynene (spray foam). These insulations do cost more than standard fiberglass batts, but they also provide a much better thermal barrier which leads to greater efficiency.

Icynene is a product that both seals and insulates in one step. We've used it in our homes and have been pleased with its performance. The only drawback is the cost - typically three times more than other insulation. Because of the cost it can be hard to convince my clients to consider Icynene. Perhaps this video will change some minds. Buddy Fisher is with Goley Insulation and his demonstration should help homeowners understand the differences between common types of insulation and the importance of a thorough caulk/seal package.
