This video was produced by the Ontario Nurses' Association (ONA) as a tribute to the union's inaugural president and founding member who died on April 3, 2006. Lowrey was a pioneer in the Canadian nursing movement, championing better working conditions for nurses and devoting her skills and energy to nursing for more than 40 years.
Graduating as a psychiatric nurse in 1951, Lowery received her public health certificate from the University of Toronto School of Nursing in 1957.
Lowery also served in various capacities as a member of ONA's staff until her retirement in 1991. She was the Director of Human Resources and Director of Association Services, and she began her career with ONA as a staff Employment Relations Officer, working directly with front-line nurses in labour relations matters.
Upon her retirement, she was awarded an ONA Honourary Membership.
