Ghost Ambience 233 3 Ring Modulation is an ambient music exploration using the SynFactory 1.15 modular software synthesizer as the prime sound source for the composition. All sequences were created using SynFactory 1.15 with different sequences added during the recording process to build a complex fluid and surreal atmospheric mix. In the title 233 3 represents the number of oscillators used to create the sequences. Two square-wave oscillators control the FM of a bank of three additive sinewave generators (each with nine harmonic components to build tones using harmonic synthesis). One of the square-wave oscillators controls the clock-time of the sixteen-step sequencer, driving three additional sinewave oscillators that feed the triple ring-modulators for the eerie pulsating gong-like and metallic combinations provided by the various oscillators. The three harmonic sinewave bank oscillators are in turn ring-modulated by three sinewave oscillators. The outputs of the three ring-modulators are fed to three delay modules, each set to a slightly different length and feedback setting. The wet and dry outputs of the three delay modules are in turn connected to the right and left channels of the output module to create the stereo effect of the delayed signals. Subtle changes in the settings of the timing oscillators, the frequencies of the sinebank oscillators and the auxiliary sinewave oscillators, the positions of the step controls of the sequencer, and the delay unit controls, will affect greatly the output signal in sometimes unpredictable ways. One can adjust the virtual knobs in real-time and record the effect of these changes as part of the recorded output WAV file. Using Adobe Audition 2.0, a six-minute sequence provided by the SynFactory 1.15 Ghosts patch was inserted into one of the tracks. The same track was copied and time-shifted to effectively double the sound and pasted onto track two. The stereo channels were swapped for track two. These tracks were mixed down with EQ and added stereo reverb to create the main ambient sequence. This mixed down version was taken, and slowed down by 800% to create the deep bass atmospherics. This bass track was added to the main mix, and the combined tracks were mixed to create the strange, fluid and ringing resonating shrills that are heard in the final version. The track is quite eerie and frightening, reminiscent of the soundtrack to a horror dream sequence or science fiction scene in the outer realms of the Universe. It is the ring modulation of the oscillators that impart the distinctive synthesis of the sounds that extend their life through long delays and stereo reverb. The visuals are a combination of synthetic modulating waveforms and multiple superimposed water reflections of lights and gate openings, reflected in pools of water. In some sections, the movement of a television screen showing faces in closeup can be seen. The images have multiple superimposed positive and negative effects to create a dream-like and somewhat Gothic atmosphere to complement the surreal music. Long dissolves between scenes blend the images together. The result is a complex and scary atmospheric ambient image and sound exploration. The composition relates to feelings and exposures that transcend the everyday world of this reality.
