On Wednesday, Chinese authorities defended its tariff on imports of US chicken products—saying its policies are legal.
The US had filed a compliant with the World Trade Organization (WTO), accusing Chinese authorities of breaching international trade regulations.
The Chinese Ministry of Commerce retorted saying its "anti-dumping and countervailing measures on US chicken products" are legal and in agreement with the WTO regulations.
Chinese authorities imposed the tariff last September, after accusing US companies of benefiting from government subsidies and dumping their goods in China at below market prices.
Reuters reported that the tariff is a reprisal for a US ban on Chinese cooked chicken imports, and President Obama's 2009 decision to impose a 35 percent tariff on Chinese-made tires.
China is one of two top markets for US chicken exports. The Associated Press reported US chicken exports plunged 90 percent after Chinese authorities imposed the tariff—a loss of more than $1 billion over two years.
