Guess the point here was not exactly whether Jim is a likeable guy or not...goes far beyond this! You could expand this to the whole society, to the American Way of Life (and others...), you could relate to our times (Harsh Times!) or to the war trauma, to the war real actors or reasons, to war post-traumatic disorder, to individual choices and motivations and their repercussions...You could also say that life is what you make of it... Any way you choose!

Depressing. I suppose it had it's points but Christian Bale was not a likeable guy in the movie.
