@cjk002 A year or so ago, a reporter asked Bradley Whitford if his Josh Lyman character was based on Rahm Emanuel. Brad smiled and said "Fuck no!". That was a joke about then-recent revelations that while serving as President Obama's chief of staff, Emanuel frequently swore at Congressmen.

Shouldn't have thrown the spoiler in there at the end. With these tags that was a great way to promote the show and get people to watch and actually become aware of the complexities of American politics before the next time they vote. Now they all know the end. Granted people should still definitely watch the show before the next time they vote, no matter which party they support. Throw a McCain tag in there as well.

@kmrs1959 Had it not been for JOhn Spencers death Vinnick would have one the election in The West wing

that was a cheap shot!
the show was finished before Obama even started running for president.
The last episode aired in early 2006.

Odd that they connect him with Santos. Seems he based himself on Bartlet.
-
Vinick was actually a Catholic who lost his faith after his wife passed away.

Actually he wasn't, at least in the beginning. Nobody in the show knew Emmanuel. There was the fish thing, but this was later (Emmanuel's brother was the agent of one of the producers).
Arnold Vinick was a real maverick who didn't have to announce it to the world every 5 minutes. Not to mention, he was a pro-choice atheist/agnostic. Of course, in real life, Republicans would never nominate anyone like that.
