@jollyjon04 dave took over lead in les miz when colm took show to america, after a long period in lead ,took it to manchester, when chap in chorus, peter[ from birds of a feather] took over, but only lasted a fortnight! dave willets had to return, then went to playing the lead in phantom, best lead performer. all the casts in both shows intermingled between the two.

Yes, Dave began as understudy to Colm Wilkinson when Les Miz first started, but Colm had a period of illness, which is what gave Dave his break, he then moved to Phantom taking over the role from MC.

I saw him last week in ALW's Aspects of Love.
I have a question. Was he the understudy of Colm Wilkinson in Les Miz when it first opened? Dave's website says he was the lead in 1985, but then the lead was Wilkinson. I was a little confused.
When it is said he was the first actor to play both leading roles in Phantom and Les Miz, that includes understudying?

Think what you wish, Dave Willetts is my ultimate fave phantom. Second Charles Dance, third Crawford/Butler and the Robert Englund. They rock.
He's good at the title song.

i went to watch both Micheal and David and both did the phantom great live this is a poor recording , if anything David did better on stage

he was never MC's understdudy- he replaced him but was never understudy. He was doing Valjean when MC wa doing Phantom
