Third graders at Evergreen Community Charter School in Asheville, NC began their school year by exploring Mother Nature's classroom during an overnight adventure to Pisgah National Forest. On September 14, 2011, students camped in the Upper Cove Creek Campground near Brevard. The children took part in several learning workshops geared toward helping them raise their knowledge, awareness and appreciation of nature. Activities such as chromatology, needle felting, no-match fire building, creek stone balancing/sculpturing, edible plant recognition, trail running, fairy house building, and journaling helped the students connect with their natural surroundings... and one another. Thank you to the wonderful ECCS teachers - Chris Weaver, Eben Heasley, Deidre Barrett, Nikki Jones - and numerous parent volunteers who helped create this "learning village" and make the adventure so memorable.
